low sex drive, what to know and do

The Low Down On Low Libido

Not feeling in the mood? Get in line! This can happen from time to time to all men and it’s 100% normal. Rather than be overly concerned, it’s best to first get in touch with what’s going on in your life. What we do every day and how we take care of ourselves can greatly impact our sex lives in ways we may not know. If however, a low libido lasts for a long time it could be a sign of an underlying health condition.

What can cause low sex drive?

Low testosterone could be a cause for not feeling in the mood. For men, a testosterone level drop greatly impacts the desire for sex. Testosterone is an important hormone that builds muscles and stimulates production of sperm. In a nutshell, it’s what gives men their mojo. Testosterone levels vary from man to man. Medically speaking, ‘Low T’ is considered 300 nanograms per deciliter, according to guidelines from the American Urological Association. Unfortunately, you can’t measure these levels yourself. It’s wise to schedule an appointment with a urologist to see where your levels stand if the problem persists.

What causes low testosterone?

Getting older is the biggest culprit of lower testosterone. There’s really nothing you can do about that. It’s just time taking its course. Testosterone levels drop about 1% each year beginning in a man’s late 30s, and could fall by as much as 50% by age 70. This is hard for men psychologically, because they are expected to always be in the mood and up for sex. It’s a societal expectation that can create a lot of pressure. To compound the issue there has been a recent explosion of ads trying to sell testosterone replacement therapy when in fact low sex drive may be much more psychologically driven.

What are the signs of low testosterone?

The symptoms run the gamut from emotional to physical to sexual. Emotionally, men cite feeling depressed, lacking confidence, difficulty concentrating, and having erratic sleep. Physically some of the signs can be feeling tired, increase in body fat, swollen breasts, and hot flashes. And then there are the sexual symptoms- trouble sustaining erections, declining bone mass, fewer spontaneous erections and the main culprit, lower sex drive. If you feel like you are experiencing many of these symptoms it’s a good idea to head over to the urologist to check out your testosterone levels. There are testosterone replacement treatments but they come with medical risks – a whole topic of conversation.

Other causes of low libido

Lifestyle

One of the biggest contributors to decrease in sex drive is one’s lifestyle- not exercising enough, too much alcohol or drug use is detrimental to feeling in the mood. Regular exercise is a great energy booster. The great news is you don’t need much to see the impact— 2.5 hours per week of moderate-intensity exercise can work wonders. Making changes to your diet by eating healthier foods and working out regularly can make an enormous difference to your sexual energy.

Prescription Medication

Sometimes the prescription medication you are taking can have a big impact on your sexual energy. Speak to your doctor about the side effects of the medication you have been prescribed to  see if they can change it. Antidepressant medication can be a big culprit of lower sex drive.

Erectile Dysfunction

Nothing zaps sexual energy like erectile dysfunction. It truly impacts self-confidence and causes embarrassment. The good news is there are medications to treat ED and in turn men feel more of a desire for sex when they know they can perform.

Lack of sleep

Not getting enough sleep is a big sexual energy culprit. When you don’t sleep well, it raises the stress levels in your body which gets in the way with how your body uses energy. It’s pretty logical. If your body is tired, it’s harder to get energized for sex.

Relationship Dynamics

Low sex drive can be caused by emotional issues too. Don’t discount dynamics that may be brewing in your relationship. Unfortunately, a visit to the doctor won’t cure this. Talking to your partner about what’s going on, and having real heart to heat discussions can help create a sense of intimacy that often triggers desire again. If this is too difficult to do alone, many couples find speaking to a therapist is invaluable and enormously helpful.

Underlying Medical Issues

Lack of libido sometimes indicates an underlying medical issue. Diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol can all contribute to low sexual drive. This is why it’s so important to speak to your doctor about it. There is no shame in it at all. It’s a sign of taking care of yourself when you inquire about it with a medical professional.
